Former Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, has condemned reported post-election violence in parts of Osun State, following clashes and killings in the aftermath of the August 15 governorship election.
Oyetola, in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, expressed concern over what he described as an escalation of violence and the loss of lives, urging security agencies to act swiftly to restore calm.
The statement follows renewed tensions in some parts of the state after the governorship election, which saw incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
Oyebamiji has since called for calm while the APC reviews the election.
In the latest reported incident, two people were feared killed on Monday in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, during a clash between alleged factions of transport unions reportedly loyal to the APC and Accord Party over control of a motor park.
The Osun Commissioner of Police subsequently met with the Akire of Ikire over the violence.
The development follows weeks of political violence surrounding the election.
Before the August 15 poll, at least 73 election-related violent incidents resulting in 29 deaths had been documented in Osun, according to data cited by Premium Times.
Against this backdrop, Oyetola said he was “deeply concerned by the escalating post-election violence and the tragic loss of lives across parts of Osun State.”
“I condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. Violence against our people is a grave assault on the peace, heritage and democratic values that define our state,” he said.
The former governor stressed that political and commercial interests should not fuel further bloodshed.
“No political ambition, localised transition or commercial interest can ever justify the taking of a human life. Politics must be a vehicle for development, not a catalyst for bloodshed,” Oyetola said.
He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and called on the Osun State Police Command and other security agencies to respond decisively.
Oyetola also called for increased security deployment in areas considered volatile and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the violence.
“Adequate security personnel should be deployed to volatile areas, public spaces reclaimed from hoodlums, and everyone found responsible for killings and other acts of violence promptly apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.
His comments come as the Osun State Government has also called for reconciliation and warned against attempts to trigger fresh crises across local government areas and motor parks.
Oyetola urged political stakeholders and residents to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue.
