The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to stop taking further action on the Akirun of Ikirun chieftaincy dispute pending the outcome of an appeal before the court.

The court also directed all parties involved to maintain the status quo regarding the stool currently occupied by Oba Olalekan Akadiri. The Osun State Government had earlier declared the stool vacant and asked all parties to wait for the court’s decision before taking further steps.

The ruling followed concerns that the chairman of the town’s kingmakers, Chief Kareem Adetoyese, allegedly asked the Gboleru Ruling House to submit candidates for the stool despite the pending appeal. Oba Akadiri, through his lawyer, N.O. Oke (SAN) argued that the move ran counter to the state government’s earlier directive suspending all action on the matter.

Lawyers representing the parties, including the Gboleru Ruling House and the Osun State Attorney-General’s office, agreed that no action should be taken until the case is resolved.

“It has been brought to the knowledge of this court that despite the government White Paper advising all parties to halt the processing of nomination of the Akirun of Ikirun, learned Silk Counsel to the 15th Respondent has informed the court that the fourth respondent has been calling for nomination for the stool,” the court stated.

“It is hereby ordered that parties maintain the status quo and avoid breakdown of peace and order,” the court added.

Counsel for the kingmakers, Chief Sola Ebiseni, also supported the application to maintain peace in the community. In the ruling delivered by Justice S.O. Nwaka Gbagi, the court said parties must avoid actions that could cause unrest.
