President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as Senegal’s new prime minister on Monday.
A statement read on national broadcaster RTS confirmed the appointment of Lo, who previously led the Senegal branch of the BCEAO regional central bank.
The swift appointment follows Faye’s high-profile dismissal of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Friday after months of mounting executive tensions.
The political shakeup directly threatens the government’s stability and its pending economic reforms.

Sonko previously warned in March that he could pull the ruling PASTEF party into active opposition if the president strayed from their shared sovereignist agenda.
This threat now looms heavily over Faye’s administration as it tries to pass crucial legislative reforms required to unlock vital financial support from the International Monetary Fund.
