The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), will host its first International Media Conference from June 7 to 10, 2026.
The conference comes five years after the Department of Mass Communication’s inception and accreditation at the institution.
The theme of the conference, “Media and National Development in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,” reflects growing concerns that developing countries risk being left behind as rapid global technological advancement continues.
The keynote address will be delivered by double Fulbright Scholar, Professor Kehbuma Langmia of Howard University, Washington DC, while the pre-conference lecture will be delivered by Cairo University media scholar, Professor Fatma El-Sayed.

The conference will also feature two days of technical sessions and paper presentations. Former Vice Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, Professor Umar Pate, and the current Vice Chancellor of Northwest University Sokoto, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, will chair some of the technical sessions.
Lead paper presenters include Dr Ola Ifatimehin of Bayero University Kano and Dr Sam Unwana Akpan of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos.
The organisers described the four-day event as a gathering of world-renowned media scholars in the ancient city of Sokoto, the seat of the caliphate.
The Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr Jibril Gwandu, expressed readiness for the event, assuring participants of a successful outing.
“We are fully ready and surely we will witness an international conference worthy of the reputation of our university,” he said.
