The Lagos State Police Command says a commercial motorcyclist was killed after residents, acting on false reports of a bandit invasion, wrongly identified him as a criminal during heightened insecurity fears in the area.

In a statement on Monday, Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi dismissed viral claims on social media alleging bandit attacks in parts of the state, including Ibeju-Lekki, Imota and Oke-Afo, stressing that no such incidents had occurred.

She said the reports were untrue and capable of causing panic, confusion and public disorder among residents.

According to her, there is no ongoing invasion or coordinated attack on schools or communities in any part of Lagos State, adding that security agencies remain deployed and vigilant across the state.

“The claims contained in the circulating posts are false, misleading, unfounded, and intended to create unnecessary fear, panic, and apprehension among residents,” the statement reads.

“There is currently no security crisis, invasion, or coordinated attack on any school or community in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo, or any other part of Lagos State.”

Adebisi said the misinformation had already led to a tragic outcome, confirming that a 24-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Kulaha Ayuba, was killed in the incident.

She explained that some youths, acting on the false belief that armed bandits were in the area, allegedly attacked the victim after wrongly identifying him as a member of a criminal group. His motorcycle was reportedly taken away, while his body was later found in a swamp within the community.

“Some youths of the community, acting on the false and unverified belief that armed bandits had invaded the area, allegedly labelled him a Fulani bandit, attacked and fatally assaulted him,” she said.

The police spokesperson confirmed that 15 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing and are currently being investigated. She added that the command had condemned the spread of false information, warning that it fuels panic, encourages mob violence and promotes ethnic profiling and hatred.

The police assured that anyone found responsible for spreading misinformation or participating in the attack would face prosecution.

“The command assures the public that all those found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law,” she added.

Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Tijani Fatai, urged residents to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and avoid spreading unverified information.

The incident comes as security concerns heighten following recent abductions of schoolchildren and teachers in neighbouring Oyo State.
