The African Union Commission has called for restraint following recent security developments in Mogadishu, Somalia, where reports indicate armed clashes in civilian-populated areas.

Mogadishu is currently experiencing reported armed clashes and heightened security tensions, prompting urgent calls for calm from the African Union.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, spokesperson of the AU Commission Chairperson, expressed deep concern over the violence and urged all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint, and protect civilians from harm.

He also called on Somali stakeholders to resolve their differences through dialogue and established constitutional processes, warning that continued escalation could further destabilise the capital and surrounding areas.

The commission also encouraged the continuation of national reconciliation and dialogue efforts led by Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside other political actors working toward stability and consensus-building.

Reiterating its commitment to peace efforts, the African Union Commission said it would continue to closely monitor the situation and remains prepared, through the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), to provide support toward the restoration of peace and security in the country.

Mogadishu is experiencing armed clashes between Somali government security forces and opposition-aligned militias in several parts of the city.

Fighting broke out around Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday in some districts of the capital.

The clashes involved an exchange of gunfire and reported use of heavy weapons in some areas, forcing civilians to flee their homes.

Residents reported explosions, mortar fire, and street fighting, especially in densely populated neighbourhoods, causing panic and displacement.
