President Donald Trump on Thursday slammed a US House vote that seeks to order the withdrawal of American troops from the Iran war, suggesting the “unpatriotic” move disrupted his negotiations with Tehran.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the largely symbolic vote occurred right in the middle of his final negotiations to end the war with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He questioned who would commit such an unpatriotic act when lawmakers already knew the status of the ongoing talks.

In a notable rebuke of the president, four members of his majority Republican party joined Democrats on Wednesday to back the measure, which passed with a 215-208 vote and now heads to the Senate.

The measure will ultimately face a presidential veto.

However, it marks the first time that the Republican-controlled House has approved a measure seeking to force Trump to wind down military operations against Tehran since the war began three months ago.

Democrats accuse Trump of violating the US Constitution by launching strikes on Iran alongside Israel in late February without congressional authorisation.

Under the War Powers Act, presidents must obtain congressional approval within 60 days of introducing US forces into hostilities.

That deadline passed weeks ago, leading Democrats to argue that the president is now breaking the law.

Trump countered that Democrats would rather see the country fail than grant him another victory, while labelling the four dissenting Republicans as shameful grandstanders.
