Air raid sirens have sounded across Israel after Iran launched multiple waves of missiles on Sunday, marking the first direct attack since a ceasefire took effect in April.
The Israeli military said its air defence systems were deployed to intercept incoming missiles after at least three waves of launches were detected.
The attack came hours after Israel carried out an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, targeting what it described as a militant command centre in the Dahiyeh district. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the strike killed two people and injured 20 others.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards described the missile attack as a “warning” and accused Israel of escalating tensions in the region.
“Tonight’s operation was a warning. If such aggressions are repeated, the responses will be broader and will cover all US-Zionist targets in the region,” the Guards said in a statement.

The latest exchange has further weakened hopes for a lasting peace in the Middle East, as the conflict reached its 100th day. Iran has repeatedly stated that any permanent agreement to end hostilities must also address the conflict in Lebanon, where Israel continues military operations against Hezbollah.
Earlier on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the Beirut strike was carried out in response to Hezbollah attacks on Israeli territory. Hezbollah later confirmed launching missiles and drones at two Israeli military barracks.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also involved in talks with Washington, accused the United States of giving Israel a “green light” for the Beirut strike. He warned that US and Israeli assets in the region were now “legitimate targets.”
Following the missile launches, Iran announced the closure of its western airspace. Iraq and Syria later imposed similar restrictions as regional tensions continued to rise.
The renewed hostilities come despite an April 8 ceasefire that had largely halted direct fighting between Iran, Israel and the United States. However, negotiations aimed at turning the truce into a long-term settlement have repeatedly stalled.
