Argentine manager Marcelo Gallardo has been appointed Ecuador’s new head coach for the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The nation’s football federation announced it on Sunday.

The 50-year-old replaces compatriot Sebastian Beccacece, who stepped down after Ecuador’s disappointing first-round knockout defeat to co-hosts Mexico at this year’s World Cup.

Gallardo joins Ecuador after winning multiple trophies with Argentine club River Plate, although he has never previously managed an international team.

“We sought out Marcello Gallardo for what he has won, but above all for what he represents. Welcome to Ecuador, Marcelo,” Ecuador Football Federation president Francisco Egas said in a social media video.

Gallardo is River Plate’s most successful coach, winning 14 trophies during his first spell, including two Copa Libertadores titles.

However, his second spell at the club was less successful, with Gallardo stepping down in February after a poor run of form and no further trophies.

Ecuador have emerged as a strong force in South American football, finishing second behind Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The team also features international stars including Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié and Paris Saint-Germain defender Willian Pacho.

Gallardo will now lead Ecuador into preparations for the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign.
