Five people were wounded on Sunday in a stabbing at New York’s Penn Station, according to the city fire department, which said all victims were taken to hospital and the attacker was “in custody”.
The victims were all civilians, including one person who sustained serious injuries, the New York Fire Department said in a statement.
Authorities have not yet clarified the circumstances surrounding the incident, but it occurred at a busy transport hub in New York shortly before two major sporting events in the metropolitan area, including the World Cup football tournament, are due to take place.

The stabbing raised concern due to its location at one of the city’s busiest transit centres, which handles large numbers of passengers daily.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance before transporting the injured to hospital for treatment.
The police and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances leading to the attack while maintaining custody of the suspect.
