Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched an attack on the headquarters of what it described as “terrorist groups” in Iraq’s Kurdistan region on Monday, according to Iranian state media reports.

The authorities in Tehran accuse several Kurdish armed factions based in northern Iraq of maintaining links with Western and Israeli interests. Iran has designated these groups as terrorist organisations, insisting that their activities pose a continuing security threat along its north-western border.

Despite a ceasefire announced in April, Iran has repeatedly conducted cross-border strikes against these groups in recent months.

Officials say the operations are intended to disrupt militant networks and prevent attacks inside Iranian territory. However, many of the targeted camps and facilities have reportedly been evacuated in advance, reducing casualties in some instances.

The state-run IRNA news agency reported on Telegram that the latest strike hit the headquarters of these groups in Sulaymaniyah, a key city in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The report did not provide details on casualties or the scale of damage caused by the operation.

Tensions between Iran and Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraq remain high, with Tehran continuing to view their presence across the border as a persistent national security concern.
