The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has condemned the attack on its enforcement officers and vowed to sustain its crackdown on illegal waste disposal across the state.
In a post shared on X, the agency disclosed that its enforcement officers were attacked on Sunday during a routine environmental monitoring and compliance operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to LAWMA, the officers came under attack by suspected illegal waste operators and cart pushers while carrying out their duties at Mazamaza Bus Stop, shortly after Festac First Gate.
The suspects allegedly attempted to obstruct the enforcement exercise.

Reacting to the incident, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the attack as unlawful and warned against any form of interference with enforcement activities.
“Our enforcement officers were carrying out their statutory responsibilities when they were attacked by individuals seeking to frustrate the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Such actions are unacceptable and will not deter us from discharging our mandate,” Gbadegesin said.

He stressed that assaults on enforcement personnel constitute a serious offence and warned that anyone found to have participated in the attack or obstructed lawful government operations would face the full weight of the law.
Gbadegesin added that steps were being taken to identify and apprehend all those connected to the incident.
He noted that the activities of illegal cart pushers and operators of unauthorised dumpsites continue to pose significant challenges to effective waste management, environmental sanitation, and public health.
He therefore urged residents to patronise only approved waste service providers and dispose of waste through authorised channels in line with existing environmental regulations.
