Real Madrid have confirmed the sensational return of Jose Mourinho as head coach, signing the Portuguese tactician on a three-year deal through June 30, 2029.
Mourinho, 63, takes over from Alvaro Arbeloa after Madrid endured a second straight season without a major trophy, falling behind domestic rivals Barcelona.
“Real Madrid have agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029,” the club stated. He is set to officially join the squad on July 13, the day preseason begins.
Mourinho returns to the Spanish capital 13 years after his previous spell, during which he guided Madrid to La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup between 2010 and 2013.

The 2011-12 season saw Real Madrid reach an unprecedented 100 points, although Barcelona matched that feat the following campaign. His first stint was marked by both on-field triumphs and off-field tensions, with some players loyal to him while others clashed with the coach’s iron-fisted style.
Madrid president Florentino Perez highlighted Mourinho’s lasting impact. In an interview earlier this year, he credited the coach with laying the groundwork for Madrid’s six Champions League titles achieved after his departure. Perez had pledged to bring Mourinho back if reelected, which he was in June.
Mourinho arrives from Benfica, where he oversaw an unbeaten league season but finished third, with Real Madrid paying a reported €15 million ($17.25m) for the Portuguese manager.
His task will be to unify a dressing room that struggled this season, with incidents such as Federico Valverde requiring hospital treatment after a clash with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni.
A seasoned winner at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Manchester United, Mourinho returns to Madrid as a European elite tactician, tasked with restoring the club’s dominance while managing high-profile players.
