Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar secured a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title on Sunday, joining legendary champions Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain.
The 27-year-old Slovenian dominated the overall race with five individual stage victories, extending his streak to seven consecutive Tour podium finishes.
“I just want to live this moment, come back home, relax, and enjoy the small things of life,” Pogacar said after crossing the line in Paris. “Every single one has a different story, a different meaning, different emotions.”
The final stage featured a dramatic finish as Mathieu van der Poel won a photo-finish sprint on the Champs-Élysées after launching a late breakaway with Pogacar on the Montmartre climb.
“We both rode to the death, to the final, and I ran out of gas,” Pogacar recalled of their combined charge.
“He knew we had to go all out; we both committed, and he took a beautiful victory.”
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel finished second overall in the general classification, earning two stage wins and declaring that he has proven he deserves to dream of winning Grand Tours.
