Nigeria’s Super Falcons head into the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) aiming to defend their title and extend their record as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
Having won 10 of the tournament’s 13 editions, the Super Falcons will once again rely on a blend of experienced leaders and attacking talent as they pursue an 11th continental crown.
Here are five players expected to play key roles in Nigeria’s campaign:
Esther Okoronkwo
Esther Okoronkwo emerged as one of Nigeria’s most influential players during the last WAFCON after overcoming early fitness challenges.
The AFC Toronto forward played a decisive role in the final against hosts Morocco, scoring from the penalty spot before providing two assists as Nigeria came from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory.
Her performance earned her the Woman of the Match award, and the Super Falcons will again look to her creativity and attacking quality.
Rasheedat Ajibade
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade remains one of the team’s most important figures.
The PSG forward was named Player of the Tournament at the last WAFCON after an outstanding campaign.
Known for her leadership, work rate and attacking influence, Ajibade will be central to Nigeria’s bid for another continental title.
Chiamaka Nnadozie
Nigeria’s defence will once again be anchored by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Brighton goalkeeper has won the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award three consecutive times and is regarded as one of Africa’s finest shot-stoppers.
Her ability to organise the defence and deliver crucial saves will be vital throughout the tournament.
Halimatu Ayinde
Experienced midfielder Halimatu Ayinde is expected to provide balance and stability in the centre of the pitch.
A four-time WAFCON winner, Ayinde is known for her composure, tackling ability and range of passing, qualities that allow Nigeria’s attacking players greater freedom.
Her experience will be crucial in controlling games against top opposition.
Chinwendu Ihezuo
Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo returns from injury as one of Nigeria’s major attacking threats.
The Pachuca striker scored three goals at the previous WAFCON, including a decisive strike against Botswana that secured Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals.
Her pace, strength and finishing ability add another dimension to the Super Falcons’ attack.
