Eight foreign nationals were killed in two separate traffic accidents involving a truck and a minibus on a motorway in western Hungary early Friday, authorities said.

Both crashes occurred on the M1 motorway near the city of Győr, less than an hour apart.

According to Hungarian police, the first accident happened around 4:30 a.m. when a truck driven by a Turkish national collided with a construction vehicle. The truck driver died at the scene.

About 45 minutes later, a minibus from Moldova carrying nine people crashed into the rear of a Ukrainian vehicle, reportedly after encountering traffic congestion caused by the earlier accident.

Seven occupants of the minibus died, while two others sustained serious injuries.

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry said both Moldovan and Romanian passports were recovered at the scene, but noted that the identities and nationalities of the victims had not yet been officially confirmed.

“Both Moldovan and Romanian passports were found at the scene,” announced the Moldovan foreign ministry in a press release.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy, while Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar also extended sympathies to the families of the victims on behalf of the Hungarian government.
