Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has visited Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, weeks after a gas leak disrupted academic activities and left students and staff requiring medical attention.

The governor disclosed this in a post shared on X on Friday, saying his administration remains concerned about those affected and is committed to preventing a recurrence.

“Today, we paid a visit to Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode, following the unfortunate gas leak incident that affected students and members of staff earlier this month,” Abiodun wrote.

He expressed appreciation for the emergency response that helped contain the situation and treat victims.

“We remain deeply concerned about the well-being of everyone impacted by the incident and are grateful that prompt intervention helped to stabilize the situation,” the governor said.

Abiodun said the state government used the visit to reassure the school community of continued support and also pledged to work with relevant agencies to strengthen safety measures and prevent similar incidents.

“As a government, we will continue to work closely with relevant agencies and stakeholders to prevent similar occurrences and ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all our children,” he added.

The visit follows growing concerns about recurring gas leaks around the school.

On June 4, scores of students and staff members at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School reportedly fell ill after a strong odour spread across the school premises during class hours.

Several victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, after complaining of breathing difficulties, weakness and discomfort.

The incident was widely reported as the third suspected gas leak in the area within two months.

Earlier occurrences in April and May also affected students, with dozens requiring medical attention.

Following the initial incident in April, Abiodun ordered an investigation and directed authorities to provide emergency medical support for affected students and residents.
