The Lagos State Government has declared zero tolerance for waste dumping on all roads and is intending to establish a “Waste Police” to support environmental sanitation efforts, following a directive from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to carry out the emergency evacuation of waste across the state.

To achieve this, the Ministry of Transportation and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), have resolved to keep roads, motor parks and garages clean at all times.

At a meeting held Saturday at the Ministry of Transportation, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi told transport unions that they must ensure their parks and garages are always clean while discouraging indiscriminate trading and improper waste disposal in their areas of operation.

The ministry, he said, would begin enforcement activities to ensure proper maintenance of all motor parks and garages.

He further disclosed that the state government would establish a Waste Police, comprising transport union members across all local government areas, to monitor motor parks and their surroundings and prevent indiscriminate dumping.

Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said waste management cannot be handled by the agency alone, which is why it is partnering with transport unions whose members are spread across the state.

Gbadegesin disclosed that LAWMA evacuates about 13,000 tons of waste daily across Lagos, while transport unions move an estimated 22 million commuters every day.

He stressed the need for collaboration between LAWMA and the unions to ensure proper waste disposal at motor parks and garages, while discouraging indiscriminate trading in parks and corridors.

LAWMA would continue to work closely with the unions, leveraging their presence across the state to monitor roads, motor parks and surrounding communities, he added, urging them to report cases of indiscriminate waste disposal for prompt action.

Deputy Chief of Staff Sam Egube noted that road transport operators worldwide partner with governments in monitoring transport infrastructure, urging all parties at the meeting to rise to the challenge of overcoming waste disposal issues.

Hon. Sola Giwa called on NURTW and RTEAN to take full responsibility as partners in waste control and management by ensuring total compliance at their parks and garages.

Gbadegesin also appreciated the transport unions for supporting the reintroduced environmental sanitation exercise and urged them to continue backing the initiative.
