A woman has died and another person remains missing after a section of cliff collapsed at the French seaside resort of Biarritz on Wednesday, local authorities said.
The incident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. local time near Miramar Beach, where large crowds had gathered to escape an intense heatwave.
According to local authorities, three divers were at the foot of the cliff when the landslide occurred.
Emergency responders recovered the body of a woman shortly before 11:00 p.m., while another diver remains missing. Search operations were suspended before midnight and are expected to resume on Thursday morning.

The third diver escaped without physical injuries but was treated for shock by emergency services.
Residents said the section of the cliff that gave way, located beneath the town’s lighthouse, could only be accessed from the sea.
A local association responsible for monitoring the cliff said similar collapses had occurred in 2008 and 2018, raising concerns about the area’s long-term stability.
