Doctors in England have voted to accept a government pay and conditions offer, bringing an end to a year of strike action, the United Kingdom government announced on Monday.

Under the agreement, resident doctors, those below consultant level, will receive an average pay increase of 6.6 per cent, to be implemented by April 2027.

The Department of Health said the deal means resident doctors’ salaries will be more than 35 per cent higher on average than they were four years ago. It also includes the creation of 4,500 additional speciality training places over the next three years.

Health Secretary James Murray said the agreement would end months of disruption and allow the National Health Service to focus on rebuilding healthcare services.

“This is very good news for resident doctors, patients and the NHS as a whole, allowing us to draw a line under the disruption of previous months and focus on getting on with the job of rebuilding our health service,” Murray said.

Resident doctors have staged 21 days of strike action since July last year and have walked out 15 times in just over three years over demands for higher pay to offset earnings lost to inflation.

A planned four-day strike, due to begin on June 15, was suspended two days earlier after the government presented its latest offer.

The Labour government, which came to power in July 2024, had pledged to resolve the long-running industrial dispute. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation last week, is expected to step down in mid-July.
