Premier League champions Arsenal secured England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on Friday in a deal worth a reported £51 million ($69 million).
The 28-year-old centre-back signed a long-term contract just hours before the Gunners launch their title defence against Coventry at the Emirates Stadium.
Konsa’s arrival provides a major boost for manager Mikel Arteta, who faces defensive shortages following a long-term back injury to William Saliba and lingering groin issues for Jurrien Timber.
Arteta expects the versatile defender, who featured regularly for England at the World Cup, to partner Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence.
Konsa could potentially make his club debut against his former team when Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on August 31.

Expressing his enthusiasm after the announcement, Konsa stated that joining one of the world’s best teams marks a proud moment for his family and emphasised his hunger to win trophies.
Sporting director Andrea Berta praised Konsa’s composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to play both central defence and right-back.
Konsa joins Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis as one of Arsenal’s key summer signings following their first league title in 22 years.
