United States weather authorities have issued an extreme heat warning for Kansas City, one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ahead of Friday’s Round of 32 clash between Colombia and Ghana.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches taking place in 16 host cities, several of which regularly experience intense summer heat and high humidity.

Weather conditions have already disrupted the tournament, with France’s group-stage match against Iraq delayed by two hours due to severe storms.

The latest warning, issued by the US National Weather Service on Monday, covers Kansas City and surrounding areas, where temperatures are expected to feel between 105°Fahrenheit (41°Celsius) and 110°Fahrenheit due to extreme heat and humidity.

According to the agency, the conditions are expected to significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, with limited overnight cooling offering little relief.

“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” it added.

“Several days of extreme heat will impact the region with poor heat relief during the overnight hours.”

The advisory remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. local time on Friday.

Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled to host the Colombia-Ghana knockout fixture, while the city also serves as the training base for Argentina, England, the Netherlands and Algeria.
