Army Says No Evidence of Osogbo Student Assault

The Nigerian Army has said it has yet to receive any formal complaint or credible evidence to substantiate allegations that its personnel sexually assaulted students in Osogbo, Osun State, following reports of alleged misconduct.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, Ibrahim Yahaya, said the Board of Inquiry has begun investigating allegations against the personnel and would conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation.

“The Board of Inquiry earlier constituted is ongoing and will leave no stone unturned. Any personnel found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other extant laws. The Army remains professional and does not condone indiscipline.”

This development comes after some students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) accused some Nigerian Army personnel attached to the Army Depot in Osogbo of assaulting them and other students.

In a video shared by OsunDefenderNG, a female student alleged that a soldier assaulted her at her hostel.

Addressing sexual assault allegations circulating on social media, Yahaya said the command had taken note of claims attributed to the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, but had not received evidence to support them.

“At this time, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo has not received any formal complaint, medical report, or credible evidence from any alleged victim, witness, or the University Management to substantiate the claim of rape by our personnel,” he said. He added that, in the absence of verifiable evidence, the allegations remained unconfirmed and appealed to anyone with relevant information to assist the investigation.

“You are kindly requested to come forward and present your evidence directly and confidentially to the Board of Inquiry at the Headquarters, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, or through the Army Public Relations Office. Your identity and safety will be protected in line with military and legal procedures. This is the only credible path to identifying and prosecuting the culprits if they exist.”

The Army also urged the media, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Osun State University management and the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could undermine the investigation.
