Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is 90 years old, saying he has evidence to support the assertion and would present it in court if required.
Atiku made the claim during a Hausa-language interview with the BBC, whose English translation has also circulated. His comments come as political parties and presidential hopefuls begin positioning themselves for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with questions about the age and physical fitness of potential candidates likely to remain part of the political debate.
Atiku, born in 1946 and turning 80 in 2027, compared his health and physical condition with Tinubu’s, whom he described as significantly older than his publicly stated age.
Public records list President Tinubu’s birth year as 1952, which would make him about 74 in 2026. Atiku’s claim therefore contradicts the president’s documented age by more than a decade.
The former vice president did not provide the evidence during the interview but said he was prepared to produce it through legal proceedings. The claim is likely to draw further attention as Atiku considers another presidential bid and political discussions intensify around the suitability of candidates for the 2027 election.
Beyond age, Atiku also spoke about his plans for Nigeria’s ports and regional economic development. He proposed reviving ports in the South-South and South-East regions to reduce the country’s dependence on Lagos for maritime trade.
He argued that developing ports in other parts of the country would improve the movement of goods, support businesses and reduce pressure on Lagos-based infrastructure.
Atiku’s comments add to the growing political debate over leadership, age, health and economic policy as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections. His claim about Tinubu’s age, however, remains at odds with publicly available records, while any evidence he says he possesses has yet to be presented publicly.
