Monaco striker Folarin Balogun will start for the United States against Belgium in Monday’s World Cup round-of-16 clash after FIFA suspended his one-match ban following a personal intervention from President Donald Trump.

US coach Mauricio Pochettino immediately named the striker to his official starting lineup as the co-hosts chase their first quarter-final berth since 2002.

Balogun, who has already scored three goals in the tournament, originally faced suspension after receiving a red card for treading on a Bosnian defender during Wednesday’s 2-0 victory.

The bombshell ruling to clear the American striker has completely rocked the tournament and sparked intense controversy.

President Trump confirmed he personally called FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to request a review because he did not believe the incident warranted a foul.

While Infantino insists that FIFA’s disciplinary process remained entirely independent of political influence, the Royal Belgian Football Association reacted furiously to the decision.

FIFA has already dismissed Belgium’s official appeal regarding Balogun’s eligibility as inadmissible, clearing the way for the forward to play.
