Nigeria announced that anti-migrant violence in South Africa claimed the lives of two of its citizens, including one allegedly killed by police, sparking a major diplomatic rift.

The Nigerian foreign ministry reported that criminals killed one man outside his shop in eMalahleni, while police officers killed another citizen, Emeka Iroegbu, during an interrogation in Pretoria.

In response to the surge in anti-migrant hostility, Nigeria threatened to activate unspecified retaliatory measures if South African authorities fail to protect foreign nationals.

South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the actions of the officers involved.

However, South African foreign ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri pushed back against the public allegations, demanding that Nigeria submit substantive proof through established institutional channels rather than media narratives.

The dispute highlights growing regional anger, as vigilantes continue to target foreign-owned businesses while other nations, including Mozambique and Ghana, report similar casualties among their citizens.
