At least 14 people have been killed and 28 others injured after a bus collided head-on with a truck in northern Uganda.

The crash happened late on Tuesday at a trading centre along the highway leading to the northern city of Gulu, according to a Ugandan police statement.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that the bus driver was allegedly speeding and lost control while trying to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the bus, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer,” the police said.

Road crashes are common in Uganda and across East Africa, where many highways are narrow and poorly maintained.

Authorities have repeatedly blamed speeding as one of the leading causes of fatal accidents.
