The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of launching missile attacks on two oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and injuring eight others.

According to the Emirati Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were struck by two Iranian cruise missiles while sailing through the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters.

“The Ministry of Defence announces that the national tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were targeted by two Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, within Omani territorial waters,” the Emirati defence ministry said.

The ministry said the attack killed an Indian crew member and left eight others injured, including four who sustained serious injuries. It added that the strikes ignited fires aboard both vessels, causing damage before the blazes were brought under control.

The incident follows renewed hostilities in the Middle East after the United States carried out another round of strikes against Iran.

The ministry condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of international law that threatens regional security and stability.

“The Ministry of Defence condemned this flagrant attack, describing it as a grave violation and a clear breach of international law that threatens regional security and stability,” the ministry said.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passed before the conflict escalated in February, remains a strategic flashpoint between the United States and Iran.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that cargo passing through the waterway would be charged to help cover the cost of securing the route. He also announced plans to reinstate a blockade on Iranian ships that had been lifted last month.
