5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southeastern Turkey

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey early Saturday, shaking several provinces but causing no reported casualties or damage, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

AFAD said the tremor occurred at about 6:20 a.m. local time in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province and was felt across Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli and Sanliurfa.

The agency said no adverse incidents had been reported following the quake, adding that emergency teams remained on the ground to monitor the situation.

“No adverse situation has been reported following the magnitude 5 earthquake that occurred at 6:20 am (0320 GMT) in the Battalgazi district, in Malatya province, and was felt in the provinces of Malatya, Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli and Sanliurfa. Our teams continue to work in the field,” AFAD said. 

Turkey lies across several major geological fault lines and has experienced a series of devastating earthquakes over the years.
