Indian police fired tear gas on Monday to stop thousands of student demonstrators from marching on parliament in New Delhi.

Demonstrators converged at the central Jantar Mantar site to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over paper leaks and technical glitches, clashing with security forces in one of the capital’s largest rallies in five years.

Dozens of police officers and demonstrators sustained injuries as demonstrators’ stone-pelting met police tear gas canisters.

The protests stem from an online movement led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which formed after recent high-profile test leaks impacted millions of medical and high school students.

CJP leaders met with senior government ministers to submit demands, including compensation for affected families, while activist Sonam Wangchuk pledged to resume a hunger strike to protest the police crackdown.
