Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, a European champion and two-time Olympian, has died at the age of 34 after battling cancer, her family announced on Sunday.

A statement shared on her Instagram account said Mageean died at 6:30 am surrounded by her loved ones after a fight with the disease.

Her death comes weeks after she married her longtime partner in Belfast.

Mageean disclosed in July 2025 that she had bowel cancer and later revealed that the illness was at an advanced stage.

Born in Portaferry, County Down, Northern Ireland, she became one of Ireland’s most accomplished middle-distance athletes, setting several national records during her career.

She represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Her biggest career triumph came in 2024 when she won the women’s 1,500 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. However, an Achilles injury ruled her out of the Paris Olympics that year.

Despite her diagnosis, Mageean maintained a positive outlook, expressing gratitude for the support she received and saying she continued to find happiness in everyday moments.

In an interview with the BBC in June, she reflected on her career with gratitude, noting that she had been fortunate to achieve opportunities many athletes never experience.

Tributes have poured in following her death.

The Olympic Federation of Ireland described her as a national hero, while Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill said Mageean would be remembered not only for her medals and records but also for her kindness, bravery and strength of character.

“Beyond the medals, records and sporting accolades, Ciara will be remembered for her warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character,” Michelle O’Neill said.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin also expressed deep sorrow over what he described as her untimely death
