The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention urged the United States on Tuesday to immediately lift Ebola-related travel restrictions on Uganda.

Speaking at an African Union health summit in Accra, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya argued that punitive travel bans undermine response efforts by disrupting trade and blocking critical medical supplies, while unfairly penalising nations for transparent reporting.

In a formal letter to U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Kaseya pointed out that Uganda has reported no new Ebola cases for three weeks and successfully discharged its final patient on July 16.

The health agency warned that the regional crisis could become the world’s worst documented Ebola outbreak without immediate international backing.

Halting further transmission requires $1.4 billion to fund essential containment measures, particularly expanding contact tracing to cover nearly 97,000 exposed individuals currently left unmonitored.
