Uganda’s export revenues surged 36 per cent year-on-year in August 2026, reaching $1.5 billion compared to $1.1 billion during the same period last year, according to a finance ministry report released on Thursday.
Higher receipts from gold and other key commodities drove the sharp economic rise.
The East African nation has become a regional gold processing and trading hub in recent years.
Gold shipments accounted for the bulk of the surge, generating $889 million in August—a 68.9 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
Finance Ministry officials expect increased diaspora remittances toward the end of 2026 and the central bank’s recent aggressive interest rate hike to stabilise the Ugandan shilling.

Additionally, commercial crude oil production starting early next year from western oilfields near the Democratic Republic of Congo border will significantly bolster the country’s foreign exchange earnings over the medium term.
