US House Passes Bill to Avert Shutdown

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a short-term funding bill on Tuesday to avert a partial government shutdown ahead of the November midterm elections.

The stopgap measure, known as a continuing resolution, extends federal agency funding through December 4.

The vote moves the funding legislation to the Senate, where Republican leaders continue negotiating a separate short-term proposal with Democrats.

Without congressional action before midnight on September 30, funding for the majority of federal agency programmes will lapse at the end of the current fiscal year.
