Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has said the state is prepared for the establishment of state police, describing the initiative as vital to strengthening security and protecting lives and property.
Yusuf made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor said the proposed state police would complement, rather than compete with, the Nigeria Police Force.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies to improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response to threats and build public confidence in law enforcement.
According to Yusuf, Kano has the institutional capacity, human resources and political will to establish and sustain a state police system once the required constitutional amendments are in place.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s support for initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for citizens.
He also said the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking demonstrates the state’s commitment to combating drug abuse through coordinated efforts involving security agencies and other stakeholders.
Yusuf urged members of the task force to carry out their responsibilities with discipline, professionalism and integrity, noting that effective inter-agency cooperation remains essential to tackling drug abuse and trafficking.
