Shots have been fired at the United States (US) consulate in Toronto for the second time this year, prompting a new police investigation after a bullet hit the building early on Monday; however, no one was injured.

Toronto police said an officer guarding the consulate heard a single gunshot at about 4:45 a.m local time and saw a white car without license plates speeding away from the scene.

Officers briefly chased the vehicle but called off the pursuit because of safety concerns. Investigators recovered a shell casing and confirmed the building’s facade was damaged.

At least two people were inside the consulate during the shooting, but Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said the building is “very heavily fortified,” and those inside likely did not hear the gunshot.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, with support from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and international law enforcement agencies.

“We will bring the people responsible to justice,” Barredo said.

The US Consulate thanked Toronto police for their swift response in a post on X.

The latest attack comes months after shots were fired at the consulate on March 10 in what police described as a “national security incident.”

Several suspects aged 18 and 19 were arrested in June over that attack, which investigators linked to a wider gun-for-hire network.

During the June operation, 43-year-old Const. Marc Pinizzotto was killed while police carried out raids connected to the investigation.

Police are also investigating recent attacks on two Jewish-owned bakeries in Toronto but said there is currently no confirmed link between those incidents and Monday’s shooting.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow described the latest attack as “brazen,” while RCMP Superintendent Jonathan Ko called it “another troubling incident.”

Authorities have not identified any suspects or disclosed a motive for the latest shooting.
