The Osun State Government has accused the Nigeria Police Force of carrying out coordinated raids on the homes of top government officials without search warrants, alleging that the operations amount to political intimidation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government alleged that the latest operation involved the residence of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), where armed police officers reportedly arrested members of his family.
According to Alimi, the operation was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for Operations.
“The SSG’s residence was busted by a combined team of police officers led by the Deputy Commissioner for Operations, with family members of the SSG taken to unknown destinations,” the statement read.
The Osun State government claimed the operation followed similar raids on the residences of about six commissioners and other senior officials in recent days.
Alimi said the SSG was not at home when officers arrived, as he was attending a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while ward officials were holding a meeting within the compound.
The state government also alleged that police officers on Tuesday searched the residence of the Commissioner for Energy in Ikire, ransacked the property and destroyed several items.
It further claimed that five other commissioners had reported surveillance around their homes, while others alleged that police officers had forced their way into their residences despite finding no incriminating evidence.
There are also claims that members of the Accord Party had been arrested and were being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department without being granted bail.
Condemning the operations, Alimi described them as an attack on democratic institutions and accused the Osun State Police Command of acting in the interest of the opposition All Progressives Congress.
“These raids on the SSG and our commissioners are an aggravated assault on the government and people of Osun State. This campaign of repression constitutes grave danger to democracy. It is a reprehensible unprofessional conduct by the police in support of the state APC,” he added.
“By openly launching attacks on Osun government officials, the state police command has again confirmed its partiality, its partisanship and its becoming a direct tool in the hands of Osun APC. This is a law enforcement agency becoming lawless and acting against the spirit and letters of the constitution.”
The government argued that the alleged actions occurred during a sensitive political period, noting that they coincided with INEC’s stakeholder engagements.
“These grave violations of the constitution and basic rights of the government and people of Osun state come as the national chairman of INEC is meeting stakeholders. The police has become a major threat to the conduct of free and fair election in Osun state.”
The state government called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, the National Security Adviser, President Bola Tinubu and traditional rulers to intervene.
Alimi also appealed to residents to remain peaceful despite what it described as growing provocation.
“Our governor has consistently tasked the populace to calm down and not to take law into their own hands. The situation is reaching a boiling point. We must save our democracy from this lawless elements within the Nigerian police,” the statement said.
The Osun State Police Command had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this.
