The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun sealing shops and commercial plazas along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor for violating waste management regulations, following the expiration of compliance notices issued to affected businesses.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed the enforcement action in a post on X on Thursday, saying the agency’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team had commenced operations against non-compliant premises.
“Following the expiration of compliance notices, LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team has commenced the sealing of non-compliant shops and plazas along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor,” he wrote.
According to him, the exercise targets businesses that ignored the state’s environmental laws despite prior warnings.
“The enforcement action targets premises that failed to comply with waste management regulations and continued the indiscriminate disposal of waste on public roads.”
Gbadegesin stressed that the agency would continue to enforce environmental laws to improve sanitation and safeguard public health across the state.
“A clean Lagos requires compliance, not convenience,” he said.
“We will continue to enforce environmental laws to protect public health, keep our roads clean, and hold offenders accountable.”
The latest operation is part of the Lagos State Government’s intensified campaign to improve environmental sanitation and ensure compliance with waste management regulations by residential and commercial property owners.
Under Lagos environmental laws, businesses and property owners are required to register with approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for regular waste collection and dispose of refuse only through designated channels.
Dumping waste on roads, drainage channels, medians or other public spaces is prohibited and attracts sanctions, including the sealing of premises, fines and possible prosecution.
In recent months, LAWMA has intensified inspections across markets, commercial corridors and residential neighbourhoods, issuing compliance notices before carrying out enforcement actions against defaulters.
