A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei volcanic area near Naples in southern Italy on Friday, with no immediate reports of serious casualties or major damage.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the earthquake occurred at 7:46 p.m. local time (1746 GMT) at a depth of about three kilometres.

Campi Flegrei, home to one of Europe’s largest volcanic calderas, experiences frequent seismic activity.

Firefighters said they received reports of people trapped in elevators and small pieces of plaster falling from buildings, but no emergency assistance had been requested.

Authorities in Naples said a high-voltage electricity pylon had collapsed, causing power outages in parts of the city. Backup electricity was restored in affected areas while emergency crews worked to repair the damage.
