English FA to Withdraw Infantino Support

The English Football Association is preparing to withdraw its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino following growing opposition to his abandoned plans to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between FIFA and several major football governing bodies, with UEFA threatening legal action over the proposals and the Football Association of Wales publicly withdrawing its backing for Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA president.

Infantino’s leadership has faced increasing scrutiny from football authorities across Europe, North and Central America, and the Caribbean. UEFA and CONCACAF have both issued statements expressing concerns over FIFA’s plans to establish a commercial arm that would manage its biggest competitions, including the World Cup.

FIFA had proposed creating a new subsidiary, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which would allow outside investors to acquire minority, non-controlling stakes in the company. The governing body said the initiative aimed to expand commercial opportunities around its major tournaments.

However, the proposal triggered strong resistance from some football organisations, which raised concerns about transparency, governance and the potential influence of private investors over global football competitions.

According to reports, UEFA sent a letter to Infantino warning that it was considering legal action, arbitration or regulatory complaints over the FFE plan. The European football body said it was reviewing possible proceedings “arising out of and in connection with the FFE plan proposed by FIFA”.

UEFA also instructed FIFA to preserve all relevant documents and electronic records linked to the proposal, warning that such obligations override any routine document retention or deletion policies.

The growing backlash represents one of the biggest challenges to Infantino’s leadership since he became FIFA president in 2016. The withdrawal of support from England’s FA and Wales adds further pressure as he seeks to maintain backing ahead of his expected campaign to continue leading world football’s governing body.
