Fulham Football Club have signed Spanish striker Gonzalo Garcia from Real Madrid, reuniting the 22-year-old with his former coach Alvaro Arbeloa, the two clubs announced on Monday.
Garcia enjoyed the most productive season of his career last term, scoring eight goals for Madrid, including six in La Liga. He also netted a hat-trick against Real Betis in January.
The forward has signed a contract with Fulham until 2031, with an option for a further year.
Spanish media reported the transfer fee at around €40 million ($46 million), with Real Madrid retaining a 30 percent sell-on clause.
Fulham appointed Arbeloa as head coach earlier this summer after he previously worked within Real Madrid’s youth system. He took charge of the first team after Xabi Alonso was sacked in January.
Garcia is the second young Spanish player to move from Madrid to west London under Arbeloa. Attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios, 21, also joined Fulham after making his first-team breakthrough under the Spaniard.
Real Madrid have appointed Portuguese veteran Jose Mourinho to replace Arbeloa as the club continues to reshape its squad after going two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.
