Gunmen have reportedly killed a police inspector and an Air Force corporal during an ambush on a joint security patrol in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Community sources told media that the attack occurred around 5 a.m. on Tuesday along the Ganawuri–Sabon Gida Road after four security personnel from two guard locations mounted a snap roadblock in the area.
The sources said the team was returning to their duty posts when two operatives failed to report back, prompting troops to launch an immediate search operation.
During the operation, security personnel recovered the bodies of the missing officers, identified as an inspector of the Nigeria Police Force and a lance corporal of the Nigerian Air Force. Their service weapons were reportedly taken by the attackers.
A resident, Catherine, said the victims’ motorcycle was recovered at the scene, adding that preliminary findings suggested the ambush occurred near an area previously occupied by Fulani herders who had fled before reinforcements arrived.
She said security agencies had intensified operations by launching cordon-and-search and clearance missions in surrounding communities to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen weapons.
The Plateau State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement, but security sources confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
