Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the country’s representatives at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on their historic performance, praising the athletes and officials for representing the country with honour, dignity and pride.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the contingent for its courage and dedication throughout the competition, regardless of whether they finished on the podium.
Tinubu expressed appreciation to the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and administrators whose efforts contributed to Nigeria’s successful outing at the Games.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports development, strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities and creating greater opportunities for Nigerian athletes to compete successfully at continental and global levels.
Team Nigeria finished the Games with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The performance placed the country seventh on the overall medal table and made it Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the competition.
Describing the achievement as a reflection of hard work and perseverance, Tinubu said the experience gained by the athletes would inspire greater success in future international competitions and encourage more young Nigerians to embrace sports.
He also commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their continued support in developing sports and nurturing talented athletes nationwide.
