Pope Leo XIV will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November on his first trip to Latin America since becoming pontiff, the Vatican announced on Wednesday.

The November 6-17 visit will take Leo to Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida in Uruguay; Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján in Argentina; and Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa in Peru.

The trip will be particularly significant in Peru, where Leo spent decades as a missionary and church leader. The first US-born pope served as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 and also holds Peruvian citizenship.

His return to Chiclayo, the diocese he led before his election as pope, is expected to be one of the highlights of the visit.

Leo will also travel to Argentina, the home country of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis. Francis, the first Latin American pope, never returned to Argentina during his 12-year papacy despite repeated invitations.

According to the Vatican, Leo will spend November 6-8 in Uruguay, November 8-11 in Argentina and November 11-17 in Peru. A detailed itinerary will be released later.

The Latin American tour will come after Leo’s September 25-28 visit to France, his first trip to the country as pope, as he steps up international travel during the early months of his pontificate.
