Airlines May Collapse Within 30 Days- Onyema

The Vice Chairman of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Allen Onyema, has warned that many domestic airlines could cease operations within 30 days unless the Nigerian Government addresses challenges facing the aviation sector.

Onyema, who is also the Chairman of Air Peace, made the remark on Wednesday at the launch of Pathways, Pilgrimage & Destiny: The Biography of Alhaji Muneer Bankole in Lagos.

He described aviation as a highly capital-intensive industry with low returns, saying operators are battling severe financial and operational pressures that threaten their survival.

According to him, urgent government intervention is needed to prevent the collapse of more domestic carriers.

Onyema also criticised the planned picketing of airlines by aviation unions over the non-remittance of the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge, warning that such action could disrupt the entire industry.

He said domestic airlines would suspend operations in solidarity if any operator was picketed, arguing that debt-related issues should be resolved through dialogue rather than industrial action.

The Air Peace chairman lamented that more than 50 Nigerian airlines have folded over the years despite the success of their owners in other sectors.

While reaffirming the industry’s willingness to support government revenue generation, Onyema urged authorities to adopt policies that promote the long-term sustainability of domestic airlines rather than threaten their survival.
