A Ghanaian court has sentenced a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, to three years in prison for abducting an eight-month-old baby from a market in the Volta Region, after police rescued the child unharmed a day later.
The Volta North Regional Police Command’s spokesperson, Felix Kwao, said Amedzorme pleaded guilty to the offence before the Kpando Circuit Court and was convicted on August 3.
According to the police, the case was reported on July 17 after the child’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, said she briefly left her eight-month-old son in Amedzorme’s care while she went to buy packaging bags at Kpando Market.
When she returned, both the woman and the child had disappeared.
Police said intelligence-led investigations led to Amedzorme’s arrest on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the neighbouring Oti Region, where the baby was safely recovered.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains at large.
The police said Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, when she was remanded into police custody.
She reappeared before the court on August 3, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
The Volta North Regional Police Command said the rescued infant was found unharmed, while efforts were continuing to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist with ongoing investigations.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society, the command urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
