Bauchi Declares Cholera Outbreak After 16 Deaths

Bauchi State Government has declared a cholera outbreak after recording 398 suspected cases and 16 deaths across 13 local government areas, following confirmation of active cholera transmission.

The declaration was announced in a document dated August 1, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Sani Dambam, after a rise in cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) and laboratory confirmation of cholera cases.

The state government said the confirmation of six PCR-positive cholera cases, alongside the increasing number of suspected infections, met the required conditions for an official outbreak declaration.

According to the health ministry, Bauchi has recorded a four percent case fatality rate, with the highest number of cases reported in Toro Local Government Area with 231 cases, followed by Alkaleri and Kirfi with 46 cases each.

Other affected areas include Ganjuwa with 21 cases, while Bauchi and Tafawa Balewa LGAs recorded 14 cases each.

Dambam said the government has activated a multi-sector response plan involving disease surveillance, laboratory testing, treatment, water and sanitation measures, infection prevention, logistics, and community awareness campaigns.

“Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to the affected LGAs, treatment centres have been strengthened, and essential medical supplies have been mobilised,” the commissioner said.

The government has also appealed to development partners and stakeholders to provide support and technical assistance to contain the outbreak.
