The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has given the country’s national government three weeks to resolve its outstanding demands, warning that failure to reach an agreement could lead to a three-day warning strike.
The association issued the ultimatum in a communiqué released on Friday after its Emergency National Executive Council meeting in Uyo.
The communiqué, signed by NAMDA President Nosa Orhue and Acting Secretary-General Aniekan Peter, said the extension would run until August 31, 2026.
NAMDA said the period should be used by the government to conclude negotiations and resolve all outstanding issues.
The association warned that failure to achieve a meaningful resolution by the deadline would result in a three-day warning strike, with the date to be announced by its National Officers Council.
NAMDA also directed its branches nationwide to hold congresses and sensitisation programmes at least twice during the extension period to prepare members for possible industrial action.
The association expressed concern over what it described as the government’s reluctance to conclude negotiations, while commending the Department of State Services and other stakeholders for their intervention.
It also raised concerns over the alleged neglect of medical education and training following shortages of medical and dental lecturers and the increasing migration of health professionals.
NAMDA reaffirmed its demand for full implementation of approved benefits for medical and dental lecturers and urged members to comply with resolutions reached at the meeting.
