Algeria Reach WAFCON Semi-finals

Algeria staged a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Casablanca on Saturday, securing their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final spot and a place at the World Cup.

Ines Konan gave the Ivorians an early lead in the 29th minute, but momentum shifted when 18-year-old N’Sira Ouedraogo received a red card for kicking Algeria goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi before halftime.

Algeria took full advantage of the numerical superiority after the break, striking twice in six minutes through substitute Ines Khiri and Amira Braham.

Between the two Algerian goals, Ivory Coast missed a crucial opportunity to retake the lead when Rebecca Elloh struck the post with a penalty kick.

The historic victory sends the North Africans to the WAFCON semi-finals, where they will face either Malawi or Ghana.

The win also guarantees Algeria a spot in the 32-nation World Cup draw in Brazil next year.
