A clash between Nigerian police and suspected armed bandits in Kebbi State has killed nearly 30 people, including 10 police officers.
The fighting broke out early Tuesday in Rafin Makuku, Sakaba Local Government Area, after police intercepted a heavily armed group reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
Kebbi State police spokesperson, Bashir Usman, said 10 police officers were killed while two others sustained injuries and were receiving medical treatment.
“Our men intercepted and engaged a heavily armed group of suspected bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States,” Usman told AFP.
He said two civilians were also killed, while 17 suspected bandits were killed.

Police said the final casualty figures were still being assessed.
A resident, Ahmad Sani, told AFP that hundreds of attackers arrived on motorcycles before exchanging gunfire with security forces.
“Many police were killed but the police also killed about 20 of the gunmen,” Sani said.
